The original Turkish
Bath by Master Architect Sinan
Commisioned by the foundation
of Nur-u Banu Sultan, wife of Sultan Selim II, and the mother of Murat
III, Çemberlitas public bath was built in 1584. Based on a plan
of the legendary Turkish architect Mimar Sinan, the bath is one of the
most important works of 16th century Ottoman architecture. Open from early
morning to midnight (06-24) throughout the year, the two-chambered bath
has seperate sections for women and for men.
And the two identically-sized sections are further divided into functional
areas:
*In the lockers area, you can
leave your clothes and valuables and put on your "pestemal",
or bath towel.
*The hot room has a heated marble platform in the center for sweating
and massage, and several skin-rubbing and washing areas surrounding the
platform. The usual bath session lasts about an hour or an hour and a
half. But here are no time limits; and after you have enjoyed your massage,
you are free to rest on the platform for as long as you like before completing
your bath.
